Born myself in a mountaineous part of France, I have to acknowledge that I have a preference for tribes living in high and remote places that keep their ancestral cultures alive. This report took place close to the Chinese border where all of the highest peaks of the country can be found (Fansipan 3143m) in the Bac Ha and Sapa region. You will discover there ethnic minorities that are colourful : flower Hmongs, black Hmongs and red Daos. Tourism attracts a population coming from villages surrounding Sapa that looks for improving their daily life, proposing handcrafted objects to tourists that are getting more and more numerous. The way they harass people to obtain a few dollars is sometimes exhausting. All you can hear on the visit are locals begging for having their objects bought or even asking for being photographed providing you will reward them for with one dollar. During those reports, I tried to flee as much as possible that kind of places and looked on motorbike for much more authentic spots out of beaten tracks. I travelled through a lot of areas that were not yet spoiled by tourism where I attempted to catch pictures of genuine scenes of the everyday life. |
